5 Questions to Ask a Chinese EV Supplier Before You Sign

2026-10-20

The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest mistake. Before you sign with a Chinese EV supplier, run this five-question filter - it separates a partner from a problem.

One - where is it actually certified? Ask for the certificate number and a validity window in YOUR market, not a brochure claim. Europe's type-approval, Gulf GSO, Saudi SABER, ASEAN TISI/SNI, Russia-Central Asia EAC - demand the specific one. A sticker photo is not an answer.

Two - which variant does the certificate cover? Approval is often tied to battery pack, charger standard and trim. The base model may clear; the long-range version may not. Price the exact unit you can actually clear, not the one in the photo.

Three - does the right-hand or local-spec version exist? If your market drives on the left, or needs a regional variant, confirm it is built and certified - not "coming soon." A car you cannot legally register is inventory you cannot sell.

Four - what is the local warranty and service commitment? The document that protects you after sale: who pays, locally, in your currency, with trained techs. No local service plan, no signature.

Five - what is the spare-parts SLA? A great car with a 90-day parts wait strangles your reputation. Pin down lead time and a local parts depot before launch volume, not after the first complaint.

Importers who win treat the supplier conversation as due diligence, not a price negotiation. Five questions, asked before you sign, turn a risky bet into a measured one.

So before you commit: have you asked all five - or are you signing on the FOB alone?
